Putting some action behind its Coming Together video campaign launched earlier this year amid criticism about sugary drinks and obesity Coca-Cola this week pledged $3.8 million to get Georgians moving through anti-obesity programs.

On Thursday, the worlds largest beverage company pledged to support similar anti-obesity efforts around the world, and said the money will be dispersed as grants in Georgia to provide access to community-oriented physical activity and nutrition education programs.

We are inspiring our hometown of Atlanta and home state of Georgia to be active, the company said in a news release, Efforts like these and others in Colorado, Chicago and San Antonio amplify the active role we must all take in helping to tackle the complex issue of obesity.

The companys announcement, as have other similar initiatives launched by Coke, immediately drew criticism from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington, D.C-based nutrition watchdog group.

In its Coming Together video launched in January, Coca-Cola touted its low-calorie and no-calorie beverage options while suggesting that the burgeoning obesity problem in the United States would be solved only by everyone working together. CSPI called the effort disingenuous and criticized Cokes latest efforts by telling the Wall Street Journal that the company was trying to deflect criticism about the relationship between sugary drinks and obesity, and stall government action to reduce soda consumption.

On Friday, CSPI posted on its Twitter feed a response video to the beverage company's ad.

According to federal statistics, almost one-in-three Americans are obese, and two-in-three are overweight or obese.

The grants announced Thursday were one of four global strategic business actions Coca-Cola said it is launching against obesity in the more than 200 countries in which it operates.
