Last week the Trust for America's Health and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released results from a new study: F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2011. This report ranked all states according to obesity rates. Overall, Alabama ranked second in the nation with 32.3 percent of the population being obese. Mississippi ranked highest of all the states coming in at 34.4 percent, and Colorado was lowest at 19.8 percent.

Clearly obesity is a health problem for the United States, and one that has been plaguing the country for several years. Unfortunately, other diseases and chronic conditions are often more likely to occur with obesity, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and some types of cancer.

Besides the statistics on weight, the report also included recommendations to meet the challenge of increasing weight. Some of these suggestions were:

1. Improve the nutritional value of school meals and vending machine selections

2. Encourage exercise in schools

3. Fully fund and utilize the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program

4. Implement restrictions on marketing foods to children

5. Provide residents with safe and accessible community play and activity areas to encourage physical exercise

While these recommendations are being discussed and ironed out, what can Alabamians do now? Talk to school officials about providing healthier school meals and vending machine choices. Encourage children to get out and play. Better yet, play with the children so everyone gets some exercise, and make time outside and in the park a regular event. Clear the pantry of fatty and salty snacks, and buy fresh fruits and vegetables instead.
