My very first experience with yoga was at a 24 Hour Fitness gym about 6 years ago while living in Washington state. I was ready to try something new to mix up my workout routine and thought yoga might be a great addition. About 1/3 of the way through the class, I was weirded out by the "ohm's" and the "third eye" talk and hadn't even broken a sweat. Unfortunately for me, I allowed a bad introduction to keep me away from yoga for years. It wasn't until I bought The Biggest Loser Weight Loss Yoga DVD by Bob Harper that my love for yoga began to grow, and I realized it could really be utilized for a workout rather than a chanting and stretching session.

The word 'yoga' literally means 'yoke' or 'the act of harnessing' and dates back to the 3rd Millenium BC. The idea is to yoke yourself to your body in all aspects (physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional).

Yoga can be an awfully different experience for people not seeking the spiritual connection, as it was for me. I will admit I have since tried a few classes at my current gym (24 Hour Fitness) at both the Broadmoor Town Center and North Academy locations and have been sorely disappointed in those classes. However, yoga can also be a great way to improve flexbility, balance, stamina, and burn fat...if you do it correctly.

If you do yoga for more spiritual reasons, then this article isn't for you. Yes, I acknowledge that the history of yoga is rooted in eastern spiritualism and emptying oneself out, however my point in this article is only to show that yoga can be a great workout if you do it correctly.

After doing yoga for years now, I have fine-tuned 'my practice' to become a great workout that I typically do twice a week. My secret is that I incorporate a cardio portion to yoga to make it great for both caloric burn and muscle tone. To do this, I apply a calisthenic portion to each pose. Whatever pose I get myself into, I then perform several reps of that pose, elevating my hands above my heart to get my heart rate up, and then hold the pose for 15-30 seconds to get that muscle burn you need to achieve muscle toning.

Jennifer Aniston is famous for her love of yoga and her teacher (Mandy Ingber) does calisthenic yoga with Jennifer to help her achieve that beautiful feminine look. I also have Mandy's DVD Yogalosophy which has helped me learn calisthenic yoga better.

So can yoga be a workout? Absolutely! I have come away from many a session with limbs that feel like spaghetti noodles and super sore muscles the next day. And, as long as I am getting my heart rate up and taking my muscles to that point of burning, I am guaranteed to see those long lean muscles yoga is famous for creating are coming through. So go out on a limb and try a yoga class or purchase one of the above mentioned DVD's. You just might be pleasantly surprised!
