As we dive deeper into the digital age and more people spend their downtime indoors with electronics, the nation is experiencing rapidly-increasing rates of illness and obesity. But according to Americas Great Outdoors Initiative, a program launched by President Obama, access to the outdoors is said to help foster mental and physical health, reduce stress and can help reverse the obesity epidemic.
And one company is hoping to inspire people to reclaim the playtime of their youth: KEEN Footwear has recently declared that Recess is Back, and is leading the charge to enable adults to escape to the outdoors for breaks every day of the week. The companys first goal is to provide a set of inspirational tools, followed by outreach to other companies, encouraging them to embrace and establish recess for their own employees.
We want to liberate the masses from indoors and make recess as common as casual Friday, said James Curleigh, CEO and chief recess officer of KEEN. Starting at its own headquarters, KEEN has reworked its workplace to put the recess theory to the test. The company is creating a Recess Center to encourage play during the day which includes a recess tracker, a detailed map of nearby recess spots, plus recess items such as Frisbees, yoga mats, and bikes.
