Summer is winding down, but many people are still trying to fit in that last week of rest and relaxation before the kids return to school, temperatures cool and we hunker down for the winter months. With one last chance for some fun and adventure, what can you do to keep healthy while you travel? The key lies in the preparation.

While in the planning stages, take the time to research your destination. If youre traveling to a foreign country, you may find that a doctor's visit is necessary before you go. Certain immunizations may be recommended and its better to know ahead of time than to contract something when youre there. Not sure how to find out? Go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, enter your destination and all of the information you need is available to you.

When youre packing, getting ready to finally go and enjoy yourself, make sure to include your medications. While its pretty easy to remember prescribed medications, over-the-counter ones are important too. You may want to take cold meds, pain relievers, upset stomach medications, allergy relief and cough drops. Also, pack enough medications to cover you for extra time just in case you dont make it home when you expect to. Not that changes happen too often, but you dont want to find yourself unprepared and without your blood pressure meds in the event that they do.

If youre going someplace tropical, in addition to your swimsuit and beach bag, dont forget your sunscreen, and maybe a hat. If you dont pack it, you may convince yourself once youre there that youll be fine in the sun without it. But, why risk getting burnt and ruining the rest of your vacation? More importantly, why chance skin cancer?

If youre flying, check the luggage guidelines. Most airlines make you take prescription medications in your carry on. Finally, dont forget a first aid kit. Its easy to get cuts and scrapes while moving luggage or engaging in fun, new adventures. At a minimum, make sure that you have band aids and antibiotic cream. You can buy ready-made kits at most stores for relatively small amounts of money.

Being prepared will allow you to get away worry-free because you have the important issues covered. Now go and have a good time. You deserve it!
