The hills are alive with the sound of Carrie Underwood, who is slated to star as governess Maria von Trapp in NBC's live broadcast of "The Sound of Music," reported the Los Angeles Times on Dec. 1. From "American Idol" to country western music superstar to governess may sound like a stretch, but NBC cited Carrie's musical talents as the reason for tapping her to "take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp," explained NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt.
Planned as a three-hour holiday event next year, the live musical will be based on "the Broadway version of 'The Sound of Music,'" the producers told Reality TV magazine on Nov. 30.
