Approximately 150 - 200 people in the United States die every year due to heat stroke. With record breaking temperatures this summer, that number is sure to rise. Thats why its more important than ever to protect your body from overheating.

What is heat stroke? Its when your bodys cooling system quits working. As a result, your internal temperature rises above 105 degrees, causing brain damage or damage to your internal organs. In extreme cases, it causes death.

At highest risk of heat stroke are infants, the elderly, the extremely overweight and bedridden individuals. These groups of people are less able to take the necessary action to cool their body. Also, you're at a greater risk if you work strenuously in hot, humid environments.

How do you know if you have it? Symptoms of heat stroke include skin being flushed, hot and dry as the body quits perspiring. There are steps you can take to protect yourself against the heat. For instance, dont participate in anything strenuous on days that are extremely hot. If you do have to work outside, take frequent breaks, preferably in the shade. Drink lots of water and drink it often. Avoid beverages that are caffeinated, high in sugar or alcoholic.
