The Federal Trade Commission announced today that shoe company Skechers USA will pay $40 million to settle charges that it misled consumers about its Shape-Ups shoes.
The FTC ruling says Skechers made unfounded claims that Shape-Ups and its other toning shoes would help people lose weight, and strengthen and tone their lower-body muscles and abs.
Under the FTCs settlement, Skechers cannot make any weight-loss, strengthening or other health claims for its toning shoes unless they are true and backed by scientific evidence.
Also among Shape-Ups' transgressions: The shoes were unbelievably ugly and made Frankenstein look like Cinderella. Some of its celebrity endorsers included Kim Kardashian, Joe Montana, Tommy Lasorda and Brooke Burke.
This FTC settlement follows a similar settlement with Reebok last year for its toning shoe claims.
