After attending the Chicago Marathon on 10-10-10 as a race volunteer, Jeff Calene began looking for an 11-11-11 race. Unable to find one, he founded the company, Heavenly Racing, and assembled a team of race management experts from around the country to create an 11-11-11 race.
When the team discovered that 11-11-11 is Veterans Day, they realized it was a terrific opportunity to honor the men and women who have served our country while also celebrating a memorable date in history. Thus, the National Veterans Day Run was born the first race ever to take place simultaneously in several different cities under one united cause.
Our inaugural San Jose National Veterans Day Run will start at the Heritage Rose Garden, just south of San Jose International Airport. The course runs out and back along the Guadalupe Trail with three distances available: An 11k timed run, a 5k timed run and a 1-mile fun walk. A large turnout of veterans and active-duty military persons are expected, so runners of all ages and abilities are encouraged to come out and support the men and women of our armed forces.
The National Veterans Day Race offers several ways for walkers and runners to help and honor our veterans nationwide, including:
- Donation of funds for a worthy veterans' cause
- Sponsorship of a veteran's entry into the race
- Creation of dialogue between veterans and civilian runners at the event
- Special finishers' pins and t-shirts to memorialize a unique day in history
Veterans can enjoy a special reduced $11 entry fee and will be honored during the National Veterans Day Run.
