Its almost that time of year. Ghosts, goblins, cheerleaders and witches come knocking at your door, hoping that youll add something sweet to their already overflowing bags of goodies. They smile their brightest smile and open their bags, ready for whatever treat you are willing to give. But, what happens when you look down into the bag and start envisioning yourself eating all of their yummy, sweet, sinfully delicious candy?

While its fun to see the creative costumes and to hear the little angels say, Trick-or-treat, its also a time of year that causes a lot of anxiety for those who struggle with trying to maintain a healthy diet when all you see is sugar. Sugar in the stores. Sugar on TV. Sugar in your dreams.

According to the National Confectioners Association, 41% of adults admit to sneaking candy from their own candy bowl and 90% admit to sneaking it from their kids trick-or-treat bag. With odds like that, do you just throw in the towel on healthy eating and resume after Halloween is over?

No. You have other options. You dont have to hide in the corner, playing with cobwebs and counting ceiling tiles, for the next five weeks because youre frightened of Halloween weight gain. There are things you can do to help you survive Halloween with your pride, and dress size, intact.

Try these four simple tricks:

  • Pass out candy that you dont like. What? Is there such a thing? Okay. If you cant find one that you dont like, at least pick one that you dont feel overly tempted to eat. If you can pass by gummy candies or arent a fan of peanut butter and chocolate, choose those types of treats to hand out. It will lessen your temptation.
  • Dont buy the trick-or-treat goodies until the day before or the day of Halloween. How many times have you bought bags of candy prior to Halloween only to have to go back and get more to pass out because youve eaten what you bought? If you dont buy it until you plan to get rid of it, youll not only save your waistline, but your pocketbook too.
  • Pass out non-food treats. Kids get enough treats from the other hundred houses theyve hit to supply a dental practice with work for a year. You dont have to add to it. You can hand out pencils, stickers, little bottles of water or any other goodies that you can find in bulk. Good places to go to stock up on these fine treasures are dollar stores.
  • Get rid of any leftover candy. Pour it all into the bag of the last little masked man that shows up at the end of the night. Take it to work the next day and give it to the office chocoholic. Donate it to the local food bank.
