Before the Great Depression, the average body type was slender. If you look at your mothers/grandmothers cookbook, you will be hard pressed to find a sugar free or fat free anything in there. Before the Great Depression, most Americans ate whole foods (bacon, hashbrowns, veggies, cake, etc), usually cooked from scratch, and they were slender. Likewise, the French (one of the most healthy people groups in existence today) are notorious for butter, bread, pastries, and chocolate. Today the diet industry tells us its these exact foods we Americans are eating that are causing our weight gain. How can that be?

The problem is not WHAT we are eating. The problem is HOW MUCH we are eating. After the Great Depression, the population became more affluent and food/social gatherings were a way to show off this newfound wealth. America began to eat for the sake of entertainment.

This is why dieting doesn't work. Diets have you eat an EXTRAORDINARY amount of low calorie (and often tasteless) food, which stretches out your stomach, making it more and more difficult for you to feel sated. What does hunger feel like?

Your stomach is located right below your rib cage and is created to be the size of your fist. Hunger is a hollow, burning sensation right below your ribs, which is often accompanied by a growl. The burning is the producing of hydrochloric acid trying to signal you that it is time to eat. It is then, and only then, that I recommend eating and thinking about food.

What do I do when I feel that sensation?

Dont get too excited! Keep in mind, your stomach is created the size of a fist. Thats not much food, yet it will be rich, satisfying food! When you feel that sensation, tune into your body and ask yourself what does my body need right now? Sometimes thats salad and chicken and yes, sometimes its a brownie.

What does fullness feel like?

There is a muscle-like movement at the top of your stomach that contracts shut and open when you are full. It is hard to detect, but if you pay attention, you can feel a small movement that feels like an opening/closing door...it only happens once so you have to tune in! Also - food doesn't taste as good...this is your taste buds telling you they're done. Your mind will go off the food and on to something else...if you continue eating, this is called mindless eating. You should be able to bend over and touch your toes with no discomfort and no food coming back up. Most overweight people find they eat 1-2 times a day, about half of what they normally would, until they are at a normal weight.
