Dr. Traci interviewed Darren Held, of Held2gether, Improv for Life. Darren teaches improv classes through the City of Long Beach and privately.
T: What exactly is "improv?"
D: Improv is the craft of working with one or more partners to spontaneously create a scene. It's really a rather advanced form of "playing pretend". The main difference being instead of fighting over who gets to be the fireman, everything spoken is absolutely true, then "yes anded" to add information, colors, labels, plot and further the story of the scene.
T: How can improv improve one's health psychologically and physically?
D: I've seen improv enhance people's lives psychologically in every aspect. The very idea of saying "yes" all the time, encourages openness to others' ideas, as well as out of the box solutions for struggles in daily life. You can simply say "yes", this is the obstacle - "and" there are a million ways to conquer it. It gets us out of our single mindedness. It's also extremely heightened listening, since you must riff off of what was just said by your partner on stage. In this age of digital overload, our listening skills have gone ka-pooey! Improv really improves listening, leading to better relationships. There are a dozen other benefits I could mention, including public speaking, taking action, confidence building, laughter, and so on. One of the things I really like it that questions are not allowed in (learning) improv. So you make definitive statements. I had one student tell me his relationship with his wife improved when he changed "Do you want me to take out the garbage?" to "I'm taking out the garbage, honey."
Physically, there are high-energy warm ups that really get you moving, but the biggest physical benefit has got to be laughter. Laughter keeps us healthy. I've worked with many handicapped people, and they do improv beautifully. D: Improv does provide some physical exercise in the high energy warm ups, particularly at the beginning of class. It also keeps you on your feet and moving, so I suppose that burns a few calories! More than sittin' in front of the tube!
T: Can being in shape make a person a better improvisational actor?
D: Being in shape can make you a better improvisational actor, in that you can change your body to play different characters. You always want to come in as a character with a certain point of view, and if you're in good physical shape, you have more of a gamut to play with. You can change your posture, play someone hyper, and often have the strength to project more vocally. The biggest connection to being physically in shape I would say is it increases confidence, which can make you a better improvisational actor, because you'll take more risks.
