Studies have shown that people believe that organic junk foods are healthier and taste better than their conventional counterparts. Some studies have been a psychological experiment to demonstrated the so-called "halo effect" that leads people to letting their preconceived notions or beliefs influence their judgments about things they are experiencing. What is important to remember is that these kinds of experiments show that many people mistakenly believe that processed food that is labeled organic is somehow healthier and tastes better. The problem with this assumption is that it can lead to eating excess amounts of processed junk food in the belief that it has no negative impact on health. This is not true. An empty calorie is one that provides little or no nutritional value when it comes to vitamins, minerals, fiber, amino acids or antioxidants. These calories are usually from added sugars and fats.

The United States is currently in the midst of an overweight epidemic. Nearly one out of three adults in the US is now considered to be medically obese and two out of three are considered to be overweight. The only way to reduce these numbers is for people to consume fewer calories. And the best way to do this is to avoid consumption of empty calories.

If you want to buy organic, your best bet is to stick with fresh, whether it be produce, dairy, or meat and poultry. Use whole grains to get the most nutrients. And consume as much of you food fresh or as minimally cooked as possible. Aim to get the most nutritional bang you can out of every calorie and your health and waistline will thank you.
