Milwaukee parents may not know about a new federal project, Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 signed by President Obama into law, and designed to provide healthier school menus for the nation's 31 million children, currently receiving lunch through their school-based programs.

A new study done by the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center and published in a recent issue of the American Heart Journal, found that genetics is not the main reason behind adolescent obesity, as previously thought. Once again, the sum of poor eating habits, sedentary coach potato lifestyle and bad food choices was found as the most important group of factors underlining the children obesity epidemic seen also in adolescents in the last few decades.(Source, HealthDayNews)

The study analyzed data from more than 1,000 Michigan school (sixth-grade) students- all participants in the Project Health School Program, having place in 13 middle schools across the U.S. The researchers found that 15 percent of all adolescents were obese due to poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyle.

45 percent of all the obese students relied on lunches provided by the school, one-third of them drank soda the day before, and only fewer than half recalled consuming two portions of fruits and vegetables. Between the non-obese students, only 34 percent consumed lunches provided by the school.

Similarly, obese students were much less likely willing to participate in a regular exercise or physical education classes, while 58 percent of them reported watching two hours of TV shows the day before, comparatively with 41 percent of the non-obese group of kids. Only one-third of the students reported exercising half an hour for five days during the week before.

Dr. Kim Eagle- lead author, and director of the UMCC (Ann Arbor) concluded, Sedentary lifestyles, poor food choices must be addressed to reverse the obesity trend. For the extremely overweight child, genetic screening may be a consideration. For the rest, increasing physical activity, reducing recreational screen time and improving the nutritional value of school lunches offers great promise to begin a reversal of current childhood obesity trends."
