Science has long known that losing weight helps control or even reverse a number of health problems, including diabetes. But some studies seem to indicate that at least part of the benefit can come from bariatric surgery itself, not just the associated weight loss.

Researchers at Duke University Medical Center and Columbia University looked at the results of weight loss surgery patients compared to patient who were on severely calorie-restricted diets. The study was small, only looking at 21 patients in total, but the findings were remarkable.

All of the patients studied had a body mass index greater than 35 (normal is 18.5-24.9) and Type 2 diabetes. Ten of the patients underwent gastric bypass surgery, while the remainder went on a monitored meal-replacement diet of 1000 calories daily.

The patients were evaluated after losing an average of 20 pounds. At that time, surgical patients had much lower levels of several amino acids and showed greater improvement in blood sugar control. One month after surgery, all of the gastric bypass patients had completely eliminated the need for diabetes drugs.
