Here is a distinction that will make your life easier, and your body healthier and (if you want) leaner. Everything counts. You do not have to be perfect to get great results in your life and in your body. Progress, not perfection is a great motto and a loving approach to improving your health. If you expect yourself to be perfect, you are setting yourself up to failure. If you will give yourself credit for every pro-health choice you make, you will find it easier and more enjoyable to achieve your health and weight goals.
How about this approach?
- You may not have gone to the gym this morning, but you did take the stairs up and down at work today several times. Taking the stairs is so much better than doing nothing. Thanking yourself for taking the stairs (or parking the car further away, or going for a walk after dinner, or walking to lunch instead of driving) will lead you to make more good choices more than beating yourself up will accomplish. Everything counts.
- You told yourself that you would refrain from dessert this week. And one night your husband brings home your favorite flavor of frozen yogurt. You chose to have some with some fresh organic blueberries. You had a small amount, felt centered and in control, and knew that the next day you might select to go dessert-free again. This is a much better approach than thinking that you failed, or (perish the thought) that you were bad. Negative self-talk will get you more of the same -- negative energy and undesirable results. Celebrate the wins within the choices. Everything counts.
- Diets and deprivation suck, discipline rocks. The mental attitude of being on a diet is akin to counting down the number of minutes left in the dentist chair. Anybody who starts a diet can't wait for the diet to end. And then what? Diets are one of the main causes of weight gain! When you deprive your body of necessary calories, it triggers a mechanism that causes your body to hold on to fat. Discipline, on the other hand, is a self-honoring choice that means you are taking good care of yourself rather than denying yourself. The difference in the mindset can be the difference between a happy, lean, energeting self, and a tired, cranky you that wishes you could eat but you have denied yourself which feels like being punished. Make healthy choices as often as you can. Everything counts.
- Reducing stress and living a more balanced life support your health and weight goals. Stress hormones program your body to hold on to fat. Being stressed out puts you at greater risk to using food to medicate you rather than to nurture you. On the other hand, when you are well-rested, feeling calmer and more relaxed, you are more apt to look into the firdge when you are hungry and ask yourself, "What would nourish my body now?" Each time you do this you have reinforced healthy habits and moved further away from poor choices. Everything counts.
Take really good care of yourself. The world is a better place when you make your health a priority. You may inspire a life and maybe even save a life by being a good role model for others.
