It would be great if all physicians were as passionate about healthy eating as Dr. Mehmet Oz is. Recently, on the Today Show, Dr. Oz discussed his latest plan called the Eat What You Love diet.
With only four rules, the plan sounds simple enough. Will it work?
The first rule is to portion foods. This is a good place to start for any weight loss plan and is not a new concept. Thumbs up for the first rule!
Along with portioning foods, the Eat What You Love diet limits calories to 1450. That is doable for women, but some men might find the limit a bit restrictive.
The second rule is not to skip meals. Again, this is good advice. By skipping meals, one may be tempted to overeat at the next meal or consume large snacks that can blow the daily calorie count.
Thirdly, Dr. Oz recommends a good nights sleep. He reports that sleep deprivation can lead to the overconsumption of carbohydrates, as found in a study from the University of Chicago. Another good point--people will make better food choices when refreshed after seven or eight hours sleep.
The last rule on the list is to walk. According to Dr. Oz, walking not only helps burn off calories but can help avert a craving, as reported by English researchers. And most everyone can walk at some time during the day, even in 15 minute increments.
Dr. Oz allows two snacks a day, each totally 125 calories. He offers suggestions for snacks and for food swaps just in case one prefers a different food item.

To follow Dr.Ozs diet, one will need access to calorie counts and a way to measure portions. A record of what one eats everyday would be helpful to keep track of calories. If one desires more structure or group sessions, local dietitians and groups such as Weight Watchers are available to help.
Anyone can lose weight on any diet. But to maintain that weight loss throughout the years is the real challenge. If a diet fits ones lifestyle, then it will be easier to stick with the plan and achieve success.
