One of the keys to successful weight loss is finding food that is not only healthy but also tasty as well. Many a diet has been derailed through the constant eating of the flavorless and expensive "diet" foods found in your local grocery store. Fortunately Nashville, like many communities across the country, has a bountiful resource of inexpensive, nutritious, and locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats, and nuts in the Nashville Farmer's Market. In this ongoing series, we look at what locally grown and nutritious fruits and vegetables are available at your local farmer's market during a given month, and then provide links to healthy recipes using those ingredients.

July is a cornucopia month at your local farmer's market. Many of the fresh fruits and vegetables you love will be right in the middle of their seasonality during this month. But a few items just start to hit their seasonal peak during July. Here you will find some of the best of those items, along with links to healthy recipes to use them.

Okra

Long a staple of the Southern plate, okra just starts to hit its seasonal stride in Tennessee in July and your local farmer's market should be overflowing with it by mid-month. Okra is a low calorie food, just 33 calories for a cup of chopped raw okra, and offers multiple health benefits, including high contents of fiber and good doses of Vitamins A, C, and K. The mucilaginous qualities of okra that give it its trademark "slime" are a natural laxative and help relieve constipation.
