As important as it is to know what to buy, it is also important to know when it is best to eat certain food groups throughout the day.
It is better to load carbohydrates, such as breads and whole grains in the morning to sustain energy throughout the day, nutritionist Tracy Berman said. This also helps keep the body full, so later at night for dinner people arent eating too much before they go to bed.
This doesnt mean eat a huge meal in the mornings it just means that people should make their breakfast consists of whole grains, such as a whole grain cereal or whole wheat bagels, she said.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because the body has been without food for about six to eight hours, chef and nutritionist Chris Pipilis said.
The early part of the day is when the body is most efficient at burning calories, he said. At night the body slows down, so it doesnt burn calories as quickly.
Throughout the day people should eat every three to four hours, Berman said. This should be about three meals with two small snacks in between.
People dont need to eat that much in one sitting, everything is good in moderation, Pipilis said.
It is the portion sizes that people have issues with, he said. In America, people think that big portion sizes is how they are supposed to eat, which has led to the obesity epidemic.
The main thing is to listen to when the body is full, Berman said. Sometimes people are distracted when they eat and thats when they tend to overeat.
People should eat bigger meals earlier in the day because the body has more time to process it before they go to bed, running advocate Tim Cannon said.
