A new small study has revealed that watching an avatar exercise and learn about healthy eating in a virtual world may help people lose weight and be healthy in real life.

In a study published in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, researchers have found that women who watched an avatar exercise and make healthy food choices lost an average of 3.5 pounds over a four week time frame.

Despite never having played a virtual reality game, the study revealed that 88% of the 128 overweight female participants believed that watching an avatar could effectively help them lose weight.

Although the woman could not manipulate their avatar, they watched a character similar in physical appearance to themselves perform tasks such as shopping for healthy food and choosing the correct portion size for weight loss.

Napolitano also believes if proven to be effective in the long run, this may offer an inexpensive way for millions of overweight and obese men and women to learn the skills and behaviors they need to lose weight and keep it off.
