The world stood in awe of the Royal Wedding on Friday morning. By default (and a severely delayed plane ride), I was actually up to watch as the long-anticipated (and noticeably skinnier) Kate Middleton stepped out of her Rolls Royce and down the red carpet; showing off her beautiful dress and even more beautiful smile. The question (among many) that has been asked since that day ishow did Kate Middleton get even smaller than she already was, and what was the Kate Middleton diet?
The answer, reportedly, is the Dukan diet. A very popular French diet invented by Dr. Pierre Dukan, which brings followers through four phases:
Phase 1 Dukan titles the attack phase where adherents may lose about 7 pounds. For 5 days in this phase, you eat only lean protein in unlimited quantities.
Phase 2 Dukan titles the cruise phase where adherents alternate between pure protein days (eating unlimited quantities of lean protein) and protein mixed with 28 approved vegetables (mainly non-starchy vegetables which excludes things like potatoes, corn, peas, etc).
Phase 3 Dukan has named the consolidation phase where adherents reintroduce regular foods to their diet with two festive meals (eating whatever one wants) and continuing in the protein and vegetable majority intake. One is allotted unlimited protein and vegetables every day, 1 piece of fruit that is low in sugar (like berries), 2 servings of grains, and 1 serving of cheese.
The last phase Dukan describes as the stabilization phase where you may eat whatever it is you would like to eat, as long as you have 1 pure protein day each week (eating only lean protein) for one day for the rest of your life, and have 1-2 tablespoons of oat bran every day.
The pros of this diet are that it is high in protein (obviously) and nutrient rich vegetables (which we Americans just do not get enough of). The short-term phases help keep up the motivation and the quick weight loss helps keep people on the plan.
The cons of this diet are that followers complain of bad breath, constipation, dry mouth, and fatigue, which is a huge concern because it points to a larger problemthat the follower is not getting enough nutrients.
The other downside is that it is another dietpromising unlimited quantitiesall you can eat. This stretches out the stomach and when you are allowed to cheat, you end up eating way more than originally planned because your stomach is much larger than when you first began. You also get cheat days where your body will most likely cling to the rare nutrients it is receiving because of deprivation, making weight loss much more difficult.
All in all, yes, you will lose weight on this dietand very quickly at that.
