Love red meat? Not gaga for grains? Then the Paleo diet, sometimes referred to as the caveman food plan or Primal diet, just might help you lose weight and enhance your health. Neely Quinn, co-author of the "Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Paleo," explains how it works in this Q & A.

  • Question: What originally appealed to you about the Paleo diet when you decided to try it? "Through a series of food sensitivity tests and trial and error I figured out I couldn't tolerate any grains or dairy at all, so I had to eat Paleo," says Neely. "You're cutting out unnecessary foods like grains, dairy, sugar, soy, vegetable oils, and beans and just eating foods that truly satisfy your hunger like meat, seafood, eggs, veggies, fruit, and some nuts and seeds. Weight loss is often an easy process for people on the diet."
  • Question: What are the main foods that someone eats on a Paleo diet? "The main foods are the same foods our Paleolithic hunter gatherer ancestors have eaten for 2.5 million years: meat (and organs) from all kinds of animals, fish and seafood, eggs, all kinds of vegetables, all kinds of fruits, and some nuts and seeds," Neely comments. "But it's not just any meat or any veggies. In order to mimic what we evolved eating we need to make it the wildest meat and the most toxin-free plant foods possible."
  • Question: What are the foods to avoid? "The biggest no-no is grains," emphasizes Neely. "Grains are really hard on your digestive system. Some of their components, like gluten and lectins, can do serious damage to the lining of your gut. In addition, dairy is technically not Paleo, but people who are "Primal" will include whole fat, preferably raw dairy like butter. We didn't evolve eating dairy after we're weaned from our mothers and a large percentage of the world is actually lactose intolerant," adds Neely.
