"You should go on a diet." Those words, delivered in the context of "I'm just trying to help you," can be helpful - or hurtful. It's a common scenario: you notice that a friend or family member has packed on the pounds. You're concerned about your loved one's health. And so, with the best of intentions, you say, "I really think you could benefit from a diet."

So here's the question: are you doing the "right thing" when you give unsolicited advice on dieting? Here's what experts generally agree:

  • Telling a child to diet? Bad idea. A fat loss overview can help you produce a clear outline of what you need to focus on to accomplish your fat loss goal if you're a novice; or serve as a reminder for the ones who are at an intermediate or more enhance step of their weight loss program. Applying are seven steps that can serve as methods for your special weight loss program. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not the same. Many weight loss plans have misled people into believing that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss programs only work by producing a person's body to lose more muscle flesh and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. It can backfire, resulting in eating disorders.
  • Nagging a loved one to lose weight? Bad idea. They can feel compelled to eat right in front of you - and then head to the fast food restaurant as soon as they leave the house.
  • Taking on the role of family food police, criticizing what everyone orders in a restaurant, for example? Bad idea. You can alienate everyone, making them rebel and order exactly what you say to avoid.

The key: "unsolicited advice" is a no-no. If someone asks for your help, give it gently and non-judgmentally.
