So, how did we become the second fittest city in the nation? The article points to several good habits that anyone is able to incorporate into their own lifestyle.
Good habit 1: Our local commute is much easier than almost anywhere else. This means less time in the car and more time moving around. If you have a long commute, consider taking a walk on your lunch break.
Good habit 2: According to EPA air quality standards, our air is one of the highest qualities of any other city tested. Uhm...I guess the only way to fix that is to move to Colorado Springs.
Good habit 3: Our residents participation in sports is 33% higher than the nation average. Get on a team!
Good habit 4: There is one health food store for every 5,975 residents, obliterating the national average of one store per 12,118. Shop local, eat organic!
Good habit 5: Donuts are 65% less popular here than average. So, those are some things we're doing right. What are we doing wrong? Here are some of our bad habits which coincide with some of the '1 fattest city' bad habits (namely, Miami, FL...sorry Miami):
Bad habit 1: Fast food is more popular here than the national average...blech!
Bad habit 2: Our residents are 41% less likely to participate in aerobics. Shame on us!
Bad habit 3: Colorado state law limits or prohibits obesity-related lawsuits against food manufacturers and restaurants. I say we sue the pants off Colorado state!
So overall, well done Colorado Springs! Let's keep it up for the years to come!!!
