As you know, dieting is popular in America. What about bodybuilding diets? What does it take to get ready for a competition? What does a bodybuilder do to lose weight?
Josh Cary, a 26 year old local bodybuilder, has mastered the art of dieting for bodybuilding competitions! In one year he competed in 7 competitions (very unusual for any bodybuilder)! In 2010 Josh won the NPC Montana State Championship as a middle weight. In addition, he won first place at the 2010 NPC NW Night of Champions, again as a middle weight. Quite a successful start for someone who has only been involved in competitive bodybuilding for 2 years! As the general manager and part owner of Lifestyles Fitness, he obviously knows what it takes to get fit from the inside out. So how does he do it? What are his dieting strategies?
Josh prepares approximately 12 weeks for each competition. In this period of time, he will lose 10-12 lbs. and drop from 6% to 3% body fat (9-15% is average for his age group). Josh always stays within 10-12 lbs. of his competition weight which gives him an edge over many of his competitors. Many competitors gain 30+ lbs. off season. Imagine having to lose all of that weight each time you compete? Not only is it difficult, its very hard on your heart. Josh slowly loses the weight, preserving his muscle mass and gradually losing excess body fat.
As he begins the 12 week diet, he uses the first 2 weeks as a break in period. Josh starts to wean and lean his eating habits as he cuts back on sugar and fat. At 10 weeks out, hes mainly eating a combination of lean protein and complex carbohydrates. For example, he will include lean chicken and brown rice pasta in his daily diet. He eats approximately every 3 hours, or 7 times a day! This is a great way to feed the metabolism, preserve lean muscle and maintain good energy levels.
Josh combines weight training with cardiovascular workouts to achieve top physical form as a competitor. 6 weeks into his diet, he cuts his cardiovascular workouts from 7 to 5 days per week. He also increases the amount of carbohydrates he eats. Sodium is restricted most days of the week.
