Its a generally-accepted rule that most sequels pale in comparison to the originals, but Beachbodys P90X program has bucked the trend of workout one-hit wonders. Fitness phenom Tony Hortons philosophy is simple, yet has struck a chord with millions: Try to avoid boredom, plateau and injury the three things that can cause people to lose their mojo.

And after selling more than 4.5 million copies of the first installment, Horton released P90X2 this past December to even more rave reviews. I can personally attest to the programs results-oriented approach, having knocked nearly a minute off my mile run time after recently completing the 90-day circuit (read more on my journey here, here and here).

I had a chance to chat with Horton and ask him about how he stays fitter and healthier than many men half his age, plus his mantra for staying motivated. Here are a few of his thoughts on age-defying workouts, his laws for health and fitness and what we can expect next from our generations most-followed exercise evangelist:

Q: Whats your current workout & nutrition regimen?
TH: Im getting away from the linear, traditional training programs of the past. If youve done P90X2, youre familiar with PAP, which is pretty cutting-edge when it comes to athletic and multi-plane training jumping, turning and twisting like an athlete would on the court. And in terms of nutrition, Ive changed a bit and have gotten into eating fish and chicken again in order to maintain size and strength as I moved into my 50s. I always try to have at least one massive salad a day, and another big shift has been cutting out sugar, which has been tough because Im kind of a sugar addict.

Q: How do you get motivated when youre just not in the mood to work out?
TH: For me, thats like asking, How to you stay motivated to breathe, eat or sleep? Although its a task I choose instead of one that helps me survive, I know that if I do it, Im a better man for it. My health and my immunity improve, and Im less vulnerable to aches and pains. Its a universal fact that if you move and eat right, youre better for it. When you exercise, you slow the aging clock, and when you dont you speed it up.

Q: Do you have a favorite piece of advice when it comes to fitness?
TH: Your goal should be to get fit and stay that way for the rest of your life; it shouldnt be an up and down pattern where you keep gaining and losing. I have 11 laws of health and fitness, but there are five that rise to the top, which are variety, consistency, intensity, purpose and planning. Purpose means having something so powerful driving you that theres no question youre going to miss a workout. And planning and accountability mean figuring out what youre doing and when and fitting that into your schedule. It becomes automatic at that point, like breathing and sleeping.

Q: What would you tell people who feel too intimated to attempt the P90X series?
TH: When people hear P90X, sometimes they assume that it means 90-minute workouts. Theres an extreme aspect, if you want it, but almost every single move has a modification. This is what gets you through P90X. Its a slow, patient process over time, but you just have to show up and do it. Instead of giving it to you, you have to earn it but once you earn it, its yours and no one can take it away.

Q: Any advice for P90X grads who are hoping to tackle P90X2?
TH: I like to say that P90X2 isnt harder, but its different but its harder because its different. To graduate from one to the other requires the knowledge that you kind of have to start over because P90X2 takes a fit, healthy body and trains it like an athlete. Q: Is there a P90X3 in the works, and if so, what can we expect in the next version?
TH: Right now, weve got about 10 groups that just graduated from the P90X certification, which puts you in the mindset that I live in. These P90X-certified trainers will lock in their ability to succeed with fitness and have access to continuity videos, such as a cardio routine and a new ab ripper, along with other perks such as annual events and access to special gear. These continuity workouts are the developmental aspects of P90X3, which we will shoot at the end of the year or the beginning of 2013.

Q: Your fans cant seem to get enough of you; anything else youre working on of which they should be aware?
TH: My book Bring It is out in paperback, plus I have an ebook called Crush It, which features 27 videos with training tips. My third book, another ebook the working title is Yoga for Men, Women Can Play, Too will be about that vital aspect of fitness. Without yoga and its flexibility and conditioning, athletes become vulnerable to injury because of a lack of range of motion. This will allow you to do other workouts better and not get hurt by them.
