Two years after she lost almost half of her body weight on "The Biggest Loser," Ashley Johnston has found true love - but continues to struggle with body image. Even though Ashley lost 183 pounds while her boyfriend, Koli Palu, lost 215 pounds, "the inevitable loose, sagging skin and likely weight fluctuations" can prevent them from feeling truly positive about their new appearance, explained licensed psychotherapist Jean Fain in the Huffington Post yesterday. In addition, "phantom fat," which means that those who have lost weight still view themselves as fat, "can make getting comfortable in looser skin that much more challenging," she added.
Author of the "Self-Compassion Diet: a Step-by-Step Program to Lose Weight with Loving Kindness," Jean describes Ashley, who was the runner-up in season nine, as a "determined Southern belle who went from 374 to 191 pounds in seven months." And yet, in a recent email Ashley told Jean, "Even after losing 183 pounds, my body image is still a struggle. I went from a size 28 to 10, and still felt fat. I have never been happy with my body. I will say my self-image improved drastically, but the self-beat-up on my image never went away." Although Ashley admits that she has "come a long way" since the "Biggest Loser," she continues to feel self-conscious.
"The hope was that I would finally have that perfect body, that I would feel comfortable naked, in a bathing suit or more form-fitted clothing. I will say I did come a long way. I was happier, healthier, more active. I was living my life finally. But I still had that issue with body image. When I'd go work out, I was really self-conscious about my arms. I wore a sleeveless dress in the finale, but I never wore sleeveless after the show," she adds. But Ashley has plans to resolve her struggle.
After going through a program with Koli, she feels more positive. "That negative voice is still waiting for me when I wake up in the morning, but I try to look at the positive side of things." And in addition to eating right and exercising, Ashley is taking Bikram yoga (also called hot yoga, which celebrities like George Clooney have popularized).
