It's been nine months since Men's Fitness proclaimed my adopted hometown of Houston "America's Fattest City," a dubious distinction it held, actually, on the magazine's list from 2001-2003.

To be fair, MF understands the realities of Houston. The summer is brutal, with humidity sometimes reaching the 100s, making residents of the Bayou City sweat at merely the thought of outdoor activity. A fat loss overview can help you establish a clear outline of what you require to focus on to achieve your fat burning objective if you're a starter; or serve as a reminder for these who are at an advanced or more advance phase of their weight-loss program. Applying are seven steps that can serve as suggestions for your special weight loss program. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not a similar thing. Many weight loss applications have fooled people into believing that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss plans only work by producing a person's body to lose more muscle cells and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. It's also a sprawling, automobile-centric city, where people dont do a lot of walking.

One in three Houstonians is overweight, according to the Centers for Disease Control. From a glass half-full perspective, that means we have the greatest possibility for positive change. So, for the estimated 680,000 in the nation's fourth-largest city who are overweight, today is a day of new beginnings.

So how does someone who hasnt exercised in years get motivated and started without landing themselves in the hospital? Here are five tips:

1 Take the first step. Nike got it right long ago: "Just Do It. The more time we spend agonizing over how we haven't been in a gym in years or run anywhere except from the refrigerator to the couch, the more we'll delay. Tomorrow becomes next month and a year later, we're exactly where we started. Decide today to get moving.

2 Visit a gym and talk to a trainer. Many gyms offer specials on memberships and training packages in January. There's a certain comfort in working out with someone who already knows his or her way around. Many trainers will offer short-term, three-day orientation sessions. The more comfortable you feel with the equipment and the surroundings, the more likely you'll go.

If you're on a budget, step outside and visit a walking trail and get among people who are where you want to be. The payoff for a brutal summer is a mild Houston winter. Head to Memorial Park and walk or jog after work. The trail has mile markers. Find them. Walk a mile out, walk a mile back. When that gets easy, walk two miles and back. Then, walk the entire three-mile loop. Add some light jogging. Start small. The trail also has fitness "stations" for pull-ups, push-ups, triceps press-ups, abdominal crunches and V-ups and stretching.

3 Get on a plan you can manage and stick to it. Certified personal trainers are awesome in designing cardio- and resistance-training programs based on your current level of fitness. If you can't work out with them every day, ask about things you should do on your own or at home. If you don't like gym activities, Houston also has a sports and social intramural club that fields teams in everything from flag football to kickball.

4 Begin to monitor food choices. Nutrition and exercise work in tandem. It does us little good to exhaust overselves in the gym for an hour, only to head home and gorge on foods that are unhealthy. Find lower-fat, salt and sugar varieties of foods you like to eat.

5 Don't let others schedule in your time. You're the boss of you. Get on a schedule and stick to it.

The most important thing to remember is that Rome wasnt built in a day and you wont get built in a day either. You wont be perfect as you embark upon your plan, and you dont have to be. You just have to be consistent.

Its a New Year, Houston. We can just do it.
