The Great Aloha Run has become the running event in Honolulu with a place for just about everyone. The first year drew 12,000 entrants, but the tally of participants has more than doubled in its 27 years of history.
Participants range from the "Sounds of Freedom,"military units running in formation, to the wheelchair and handcycle competitors. The elite runners take off with the 7 a.m. gun Dany Malley, a Hawaii Pacific University student was the overall winner with a 41.5-minute time.
But many thousands more take advantage of the opportunity to socialize while they walk or jog along the course. It's hard to avoid finding someone you know. Aloha Stadium is a welcome sight, though there's still a long prelude around the parking lot to enter via the stadium ramp. And after the finish line, there's more walking, as runners are directed to the free snacks and the all-important finisher's shirt.
One of the most impressive elements of this event is the volunteer help, from high school bands to all the teenagers at the aid stations. A favorite tradition is Japanese taiko drumming master Kenny Endo's spirited drum corps.
Besides being the most popular running event for local residents, it's functioned as one of the bedrock fundraising campaigns. Over the years the Great Aloha Run has raised more than $9.1 million for about 150 non-profit charities and organizations.
