'American Idol' winner Ruben Studdard to join 'Biggest Loser' season 15 cast

In a case of "when reality show worlds collide," season 2 "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard will join the contestants on season 15 of "The Biggest Loser."

Studdard, known on "Idol" as "the velvet teddy bear," has long struggled with losing weight, and will be the first celebrity contestant on "The Biggest Loser" when it premieres on Tuesday, Oct. 8, Diets in Review reported and NBC confirmed today.

He started his weight loss journey with celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson, then lost more than 70 pounds at the Duke University weight management center back in 2006 and became a vegetarian.

But after his 2012 divorce, his healthy habits fell by the wayside and he started regaining weight.

"Biggest Loser" hasn't had any celebrities as high profile as Studdard but in 2011, Vinny Hickerson, known to fans as "Big Vinny" of the country band Trailer Choir, lost 184 pounds on season 12 of "The Biggest Loser" and has maintained his lifestyle changes and most of the weight has stayed off.
