Calories my arch nemesis. These annoying little units of measure for energy mean all the difference when it comes to losing weight or gaining it. For eons now, debate has surrounded calories and whether or not to cut them, count them, or increase them to lose weight. Obviously, for weight loss, increasing the amount of calories consumed is going to add inches to the waistline. 'Nuff said. Cutting and counting calories should go hand in hand. Why count calories and then do nothing about it? So like thousands, probably millions actually, I cut calories in an attempt to lose weight.

The question then becomes how many to cut out? Take a look at most food labels and notice that those calculations are based on a 2000 calorie a day diet. Many people, myself included, do not stop at 2000 calories all the time. The decision to down that cookie dough milkshake can make and definitely break the 2000 calorie a day diet.

If weight loss is the goal, such is mine, then those pesky calories must be cut! How much is too much? Victoria Beckham made headlines a few years ago for reportedly going on a 900 calorie a day diet to maintain her girlish skeletal figure. Even though I know that she often looks like a skeleton wrapped with a little skin, I still want to be skinny. I want to do whatever it takes to look like something close to her! Heck yes, I will only eat 900 calories a day!

Seems like a good idea, 900 calories a day, but the body will revolt. What never got reported is how she felt eating only 900 calories a day. I want to lose weight as fast as possible, but there is a line where dieting meets with starvation. 900 calories is too few and can and will create havoc in the body. It is recommended for women that the minimum daily intake should be 1200 calories and for men 1800 calories. Those are still low numbers, but there are a few things you can do to fill your stomach without increasing calories:

  • Drink water! Eight glasses a day can help keep the stomach filling full and the appetite at bay

  • Need a little flavor? Drink tea or coffee and replace the sugar with a zero calorie sugar replacement.
