With the recent shootings in Aurora, Colorado, it is a grim reminder that anything can happen anywhere and at any time. While there are some situations that happen that are completely outside of your control, knowing how to respond may make the difference between death and survival.

Never say never. Some people live with the motto, It wont happen to me. Bad things are just something they see on the news in a place that has a name but no true face. Dont wait until danger is in your backyard before you accept that its reality. Admitting that anything is possible, allows you to open your mind enough to recognize anything that looks out of place. If you dont think that anything bad will ever happen, you may fail to see a threat that is right in front of you.

Pay attention to your surroundings. This is the era of distraction. People walk around looking at their cell phones, texting, playing games, checking email. If this is you, youre an easy target. While you dont want to walk around completely paranoid, just paying attention to what is happening in your immediate area puts you in a better position to deal with any issues should they arise.

Trust your intuition. If something doesnt feel right, it probably isnt. Your mind picks up on things that dont register in your brain clearly enough to give you an accurate image of whats happening. For instance, have you ever talked to someone and felt like they werent being truthful but couldnt put your finger on why? It may be because your mind is picking up certain subtle eye movements which signal deceit. Your mind catches it, but it is slight enough that you dont quite register it.

If possible, get out of the trouble area calmly. If you have an opportunity to vacate, do so. Some people want to stay around and take cell phone footage and pictures to share, but is your life worth it? When you do exit, do it in a calm manner. Adding chaos to the scene isnt going to help anyone.

Call 911. If you think that something is amiss, contact authorities. Some people avoid placing a call because they dont see anything illegal happening. But, if you see something that looks suspicious, theres no harm in reporting it. If the police check it out and its nothing, then nothing is lost.

Be a good witness. Some people dont want to get involved because they dont want to deal with police, courts and all of the legal aftermath. But, if your family member was a victim, you would want someone to step up and say what they saw, wouldnt you? Provide any information you have, like descriptions of people and what they were wearing. Add anything that you saw that seemed out of place. Provide every detail you remember, even if you think its irrelevant. Sometimes it is the smallest piece of information that makes the biggest difference.

If shots are fired, look for cover. This starts with always paying attention to your surroundings. Be aware of objects around you that may stop a bullet. These objects may include trees, cement walls, heavy steel doors, etc. If you arent around anything that you can use as cover, at a minimum, look for something that will conceal you, or hide you from view. While it wont stop a bullet, it will at least reduce the shooters ability to aim.

If you are hit, never ever give up! This is extremely important. Just because you are injured doesnt mean that death is imminent. In fact, just the opposite is true. Most injuries are non-lethal. And, even if they are life-threatening, people defy the odds every day. Choose to be one of those people.

Seek help. If you are involved in a traumatic incident, it may be wise to choose to speak to a professional. There is a negative connotation about seeking counseling, but it never hurts to have an impartial third party to help you figure out what youre thinking and work through the emotions you associate with the event. You dont have to suffer through the trauma alone.

Hopefully you never need this information. But, if you do, you will already be a step ahead. Take care of you.
