To most of us, pre-dawn bootcamp sessions and ultra-runs of 50+ miles may sound like some form of cruel punishment, but for Jamie Walker, its just another day at the office. The self-professed committed vegetarian and healthnut who'll never judge you for bacon-wrapping your life recently swapped a successful career in public relations to follow her passion for health and fitness.
What began as a hobby quickly morphed into a career when Walker recognized a real desire for a resource to which people with questions about wellness could turn. So she teamed up with friend Alyse Mason Brill, and the duo co-founded Fit Approach, a healthy community focused on providing expert advice, instruction and support to Bay Area residents in search of camaraderie and motivation on their journey to better health.
I sat down with Jamie to get the scoop on her new project, which has earned quite the cult following among local fitness devotees.
Q: Welcome, Jamie! Tell us about Fit Approach; what it is, who it's for, why it's awesome.
JW: Fit Approach is a healthy community that aims to inspire, encourage and promote fitness and healthy lifestyle. We offer an online community where our panel of expert contributors from a variety of different health, wellness and fitness backgrounds personal trainers, yoga instructors, massage therapists, life coaches, nutritionists and more comes together with our community and readers to provide advice, support, encouragement, share their triumphs and challenges, recipes, stories and more.
We also offer outdoor fitness classes in San Francisco and video workouts (which are coming very soon!). And lastly, we are going to be opening a studio later this year, which we are beyond excited about. The best part is, we offer our community the chance to Sweat Pink by sporting a pair of our amazing pink shoelaces, which we believe help people jump higher, run farther and faster, and have the confidence and strength to be their best and healthiest selves.
Q: How'd the idea for Fit Approach come about?
JW: As a long-time athlete and lover of sports and fitness everything from competitive running, yoga, tennis, snowboarding, weight lifting and more friends and family alike would turn to me with questions and seek advice on how to work out more efficiently, PR at their next run, eat and feel better or simply fit into their skinny jeans again. I was working at a PR agency at the time, and often felt flattered that people looked to me to guide them in achieving their goals, but realized there had to be a better way!
Realizing that people had so many questions about their health and fitness, I wanted to create a community where people could learn from one another and also get advice from experts in the industry. The outdoor fitness and video workout classes seemed like a perfect extension of our online community, as it provided a way for people to really follow along and work together towards their fitness goals.
When our studio opens, we'll have a real home for our community. People can meet new people in a healthier way than meeting up at the bar and enjoy fun fitness activities together.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about a 'fit approach' to life; what's stopping more people from living this way, and how can they overcome it?
JW: Thats a tough question! There are so many misconceptions about taking a fit approach to life. But the one that probably stands out to me the most is that working out and eating right means sacrifice. A fat reduction overview can help you establish a clear summarize of what you need to focus on to achieve your fat burning goal if you're a starter; or serve as a reminder for these who are at an advanced or more enhance step of their weightloss strategy. Promptly after are seven steps that can serve as tips for your own weight loss plan. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not the same. Many weight loss courses have fooled people into wondering that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss plans only work by leading to a person's body to burn more muscle tissue and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. People often associate working out with something terrible, like doing the dishes, and eating right with that word I hate most dieting. The best way to get around this is to find a workout that doesn't feel like "work" and someone (or a group of people) who makes it even that much more fun.
It can take a lot of experimentation to find what works for you but once you find it, it becomes something you crave rather than dread. As for eating right, our culture tends to want to overanalyze everything that goes on our plates. We spend way too much time thinking about how to cut fat, carbs, sugar, etc. rather than focusing our time and energy on eating real food that tastes great and nourishes our bodies. Don't diet, don't be afraid of fat or carbs. Just eat real food and less fake food and you'll be healthier and happier in no time.
Q: Why is the Bay Area such a hot spot for fitness?
JW: The Bay Area is known for its temperate climate, a bustling, smart and young urban professional population with a flair for fitness and healthy and organic foods. Its the perfect place to bring people together and provide them with an easy way to connect about healthy living and fitness.
Q: Who are your fitness heroes?
JW: My fitness heroes are the Fit Approach community those who have shared their stories of triumph and challenge and who have opened up on what they are doing to better themselves or on the amazing feats they have accomplished as well as my bootcampers who brave the cold, rain and early mornings to get out there and give it their all. I've watched so many of them go from zero to 100 and I am amazed and inspired by their dedication, motivation and perseverance. There's really nothing as exciting to me as seeing someone do their first full set up of push-ups , run up the hill without walking or hold their leg drop for the full 30 seconds.
My other fitness heroes include my mom, who completed her first triathlon in her 50's, and never gave up while she was in the process of losing weight and getting back on track even though she was in the back of the pack; and Brendan Brazier, the champion vegan triathlete whom I've grown to love for his approach to fitness and health, and for his amazing vegan recipes.
Q: Where do you see Fit Approach five years from now?
JW: Five years from now, Fit Approach will be an amazing studio where our community can come together and participate in our fun, energy-filled workouts, which will include strength training and yoga as well as our outdoor fitness bootcamps and classes.
Fit Approach will also still be a thriving online community of people who aim to inspire and motivate one another to be their best selves through their stories, recipes, tips, advice and more. Our online community will be able to pick from a robust offering of online video exercise programs so they can follow along with our killer workouts.
