Swimming can be a great choice of exercise. It is non-impact and a great option for individuals with arthritis, musculoskeletal, or weight limitations. Swimming can definately be less intimidating than running or cycling which can increase your heartrate quickly causing out of shape exercisers to get dizzy or give up too soon. Exercise physiologist Robert A. Robergs says, "The water's bouyancy accomodates everyone and does not cause pain because there is no impact. Athletes use water to rehabilitate after injury or to cross-train. People with arthritis or other disabilities use water to improve fitness and range of motion and to relieve pain and stiffness." However one problem is that swimming can increase appetite immediately afterward if swimming in cooler water. It is a good idea to eat a small, healthy snack after any workout to fuel your muscles. However if you become too hungry it increases the chance of overeating. So is swimming the best choice of exercise for those wanting to lose weight?

The reason that we become hungry after swimming is due to parasympathetic nervous system stimulation resulting from exposure to the cold water. The cooler temperature of the water causes your body to lose heat and the blood vessels in your skin to constrict. This prevents the release of certain hormones that suppress appetite causing you to be more hungry after swimming. However this can be prevented by increasing the body heat after you swim. Taking a brisk walk or a few minutes on the ellyptical machine can actually keep the intense hunger pains away after swimming. Therefore swimming can still help you to be productive in your weight loss goals rather than prohibiting them.

The key to using swimming to help you lose weight is doing intervals or participating in a water aerobics class. This will help to get your heartrate in a calorie burning zone. Just swimming slow laps is similar than doing a slow walk which is better than nothing but isn't going to burn as many calories. It is best to learn how to heartrate train if you are serious in your weight loss goals. Getting a heartrate monitor and knowing where your calorie burning zone is will help you get the most out of your workout.

If you are interested in getting started in a swimming routine a great place to start is at your local YMCA. The Central KY YMCA has several water aerobics classes as well as lap lanes if you are just interested in swimming laps.
