One of the hottest diet trends isn't derived from the latest scientific studies into super foods like quinoa. Instead, it's based on what our cavemen ancestors ate, which is why it's called the Paleolithic diet, more commonly referred to as the Paleo plan. Envision yourself nibbling on berries and nuts while you wait for that giant turkey leg to roast? Well, you're close. But, reports Yahoo Shine, some foods that you might assume are on a Paleo diet are banned from your cave kitchen, such as potatoes, corn and dairy (see the full list below).

So why the ban on foods like dairy and grains? Paleo diet guru Robb Wolf, author of such caveman classics as "The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet" (click to order), terms the Paleo plan "the healthiest way you can eat." Why? Because, says Robb, in contrast to other plans such as the popular fat-free vegan approach, the Paleo plan is the "ONLY nutritional approach that works with your genetics to help you stay lean, strong and energetic." And he goes further, contending that the latest research shows that "it is our modern diet, full of refined foods, trans fats and sugar, that is at the root of degenerative diseases such as obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinsons, Alzheimers, depression and infertility." (Score one for Robb with the latest research comparing refined carbohydrates to drug addition - click here for the study.)

It's worth noting that even plant-based nutritionists applaud the Paleo plan's ban on refined foods. And also on the side of the Paleo advocates: The Los Angeles Lakers, who recently shifted to a low-carbohydrate approach similar to the Paleo diet (click here for the story). Convinced? Then we recommend reading Robb's book, as well as "Practical Paleo: A Customized Approach to Health and a Whole-Foods Lifestyle" (click to order).

Here are six foods to avoid on a Paleo diet, with notes:

  • Cheese and related dairy products. Tip: Love your morning smoothie with milk? Try substituting coconut milk or unsweetened almond milk, such as Coconut Dream Original Unsweetened (click for details).
  • Peanuts and peanut butter, although other nuts are allowed.
  • Beans and legumes. Like peanuts (which are technically a legume), they contain phytate, which Paleo advocates contend harms our ability to digest vitamins and minerals.
  • Potatoes are banned, but sweet potatoes are allowed (sorry, marshmallow lovers, but this is not a free license to pile brown sugar and ooey gooey marshmallows on top of canned pre-sweetened sweet potatoes). For treats based on what you can eat, click here for the "OMG. That's Paleo?" cookbook.
  • Quinoa and other grains. Note: Think that you're missing out on fiber without your grains? Load up your plate with leafy green vegetables, mushrooms and other fiber-rich veggies.
  • Corn, which is considered a grain rather than a vegetable. A fat loss review can help you establish a clear describe of what you need to focus on to carry out your fat reduction purpose if you're a rookie; or serve as a reminder for these who are at an advanced or more advance level of their weight loss plan. Applying are seven steps that can serve as instructions for your personal weight loss program. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not exactly the same thing. Many weight loss plans have misled people into thinking that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss plans only work by leading to a person's body to reduce more muscle tissue and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. Note: Despite our nation's fondness for gobbling up buttery popcorn in the movie theater, corn intolerance is one of the more common food sensitivities.
