If you're trying to lose weight, you may think that you can't eat fast food. After all, a typical fast food hamburger can contain an entire day's worth of calories. However, if you're smart, you don't have to give up fast food.

Most of the large burger chains offer salads these days. A salad can be a great choice, however, you still have to be smart about it. Things like fried chicken, croutons and fatty dressings can turn an innocent salad into a diet disaster. If you're going to have chicken on a salad, make sure it's grilled. The good news is that toppings like croutons and dressings usually come in separate packages. This makes it easy to control what you are putting on your salad.

Sub shops can also offer some great options. A 6 inch turkey or turkey and ham sub loaded with vegetables can be a great choice. Most places also do a vegetable sub. You get all of the great vegetables on your bread, without the fat and calories that come from meat. You may want to skip the cheese, and definitely skip high fat condiments such as mayonnaise.
