This summer is right around the corner, and what better time to start getting outside and getting more active while shedding some extra pounds in the process. During the winter its easy for us to become sedentary and stay inside and watch TV, but now that the weathers getting better there are numerous activities you can get involved in. Here are a few tips on different activities you can do to help shed some extra weight this summer:

  1. Walk the dog:Walking your dog is a great way to get some extra exercise in your life. Research has shown that dogs provide excellent motivators for getting you more active. Dogs wont give you an excuse as to why they cant exercise that day, they simply go wherever you go! A lot of people have trouble exercising on their own but when asked to create healthier habits for their dogs, they are a generally more likely to exercise with them for the sake of the dogs health. So if you have a dog get out there and start walking and jogging and if you dont then its definitely something to consider.
  2. Gardening:Starting a garden of your very own is another great way to get you outside and moving around. Planting a garden is a very physically tasking job and also is a great form of exercise. Between shoveling old dirt out, putting new dirt in and digging holes to plant the seeds you can burn an extra 150-300 calories depending on how intense it is and how long you are gardening. Another added bonus is that once your garden matures and is ripe for picking, youll have access to a various selection of fresh vegetables that you can cook to make a healthy meal to keep your weight loss rolling.
  3. Take up an outdoor hobby:What better time to get in touch with nature than summertime in good old Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland may not be known for its scenery but we do have access to miles of beautiful metro parks. Whether youre on the Eastside, Westside or Southside there are tons of metro parks for you to visit. Throughout these metro parks are walking and bike paths which give you a beautiful environment to get some exercise in. Not only that but if youre feeling adventurous then go off path and hike your way through. This is a great opportunity for you to get some fresh air, enjoy nature and above all get some extra exercise. While youre at it try bringing a friend. Having company can make it more fun and can even help you take your mind off the exercise.
  4. Play a sport:Sports are a great outlet for anyone to help them get moving and have some fun while youre at it. There are tons of summer recreational sports leagues out there and most can be found through your local recreation center. Getting involved in a sport is great because it gets you burning calories while youre having fun. I always say that the best exercises are the ones that you enjoy, and sports are perfect for that. Depending on the sport you could burn anywhere from 300-700 calories in an hour! Get a friend to join with you and increase the fun!
  5. Compete in a marathon/fundraiser: There are tons of these events going on in the area and are great ways to test yourself or help give to a noble cause. So if there is a cause that hits home with you, investigate it and see what events are taking place near you. This gives you a chance to raise some money for those in need and also allows you to get some exercise while competing in these races. But they work just as well if you just want to go out there and test yourself by seeing if you can complete a 5K. Either way you chose youll end up burning some extra calories in the process.
  6. Drink more water: As the summer starts to heat up, proper hydration is a must. Drinking water not only helps us by keeping us from dehydrating but can also help us shed some pounds as well. Adding extra water into your daily life can help you shed pounds in several different ways.
