The weight loss industry focuses on diet and exercise habits as a means to get you slim and trim. But, what happens when the reason for your weight issue is deeper than that? What if its your mind thats the culprit behind your excess pounds?

How you think and what you believe are huge factors in the determination of whether you will reach, and maintain, your health and lifestyle goals. Just as its important to surround yourself with positive, supportive people, its just as imperative to create a mindset that is compassionate and caring as you strive to hit your weight loss target.

Here are three common ways of thinking that may be setting you up for failure, and what you can do to switch them from thoughts that hold you back to beliefs that propel you forward:

Its all-or-nothing. Are you the person who commits to following a diet and exercise plan, but quits after the first time you make a bad decision? Either youre in it 100% or not at all? If this is you, its necessary to realize that while its important to do your best, you have to give yourself some leeway when you make a decision that takes you further from your weight loss goal.

Its like youre learning a new sport. If youve never played basketball and find yourself on a court, youd forgive yourself if you made a rookie move which resulted in a score for the other team right? Well, losing weight is a game that you have to learn as well. With enough practice, youll soon be an all-star. Just be patient with yourself in the process.

I have to be perfect. Does everything have to be just right for you to feel like youve succeeded? Do you create a plan for losing weight that is so detailed that you know what youll be eating every day into the next decade? If so, you may be buckling yourself on a weight roller coaster with many ups and downs and no chance of getting off.

Do you belittle and berate your child when they get an answer wrong on a test? No. As long as they tried their hardest and did the best they could, theyre good, right? Then why isnt it the same for you with diet and exercise? Its not one individual decision that makes or breaks you. Whats important is that you keep trying your best and strive to do better every day.

Ill try to lose weight. Although this sounds positive, it really isnt. What if a child kept hitting you, you told them to stop and they responded with, Ill try? They dont sound real committed, do they? Its simple. Either they do or they dont.

The same applies to losing weight. If you try to do it, what youre really saying is that youll work on it but its not really a priority. Instead, replace Ill try with I will and see what a difference that makes. Its a whole new feel, right? It says that youre determined to succeed. You arent giving yourself any other option.

Losing weight is hard. So, why not make it a little easier and start being your own advocate instead of an adversary? What do you have to lose other than weight, negative feelings and a defeatist attitude? Really, did you need them anyway?
