It happens every year. Your weight loss activity is in full swing, your patterns are down, your exercise is strong... and then you are hit with the seasonal cold or flu. Now what?

The old adage "feed a cold, starve a fever" might not be the best advice for weight loss, but does caring for an illness trump weight loss or is it just a regular episode of life getting in the way? Most of the time, let's be honest, working out and watching calories, fat or carbs is the last thing we want to do when chained to a fever or a stuffed up nose. Most of the time, we do whatever we think will make us feel better and get rid of the illness the fastest. Does that include exercise? It can, if you are up to it.

In terms of nutrition, when an illness is coming on, taking extra vitamins can ward off symptoms, or even reduce the severity and longevity of the oncoming illness. If calories are your concern, try getting the extra vitamins from pills, not extra food. Eating more might keep up your strength, but as long as it's healthy and sticks to your chosen plan. While vitamins from pills instead of food may not be the wisest health advice, for die-hard calorie counters, vitamins and minerals in pill form is better than nothing. Overall healthy eating may not ward off an illness all together, but can still contribute to overall health of the body, as opposed to getting into unhealthy eating.

Rest and/or sleep are crucial to getting over an illness. The body needs to preserve energy to fight the virus. But for some, keeping up with their healthy habits is important and a few sniffles won't stop them from hitting the gym. A popular belief is any 'above the neck' symptoms it is generally okay to workout and likely won't do any further harm to your virus fighting body. Stuffy head, runny nose, scratchy throat- all symptoms above the neck that should be acceptable for working out, hopefully at a lesser intensity than normal.

Ultimately, listen to your body and know yourself. If you see yourself getting into a workout and know you won't complete it, give yourself a day off. A fat reduction overview can help you produce a clear outline of what you need to focus on to complete your fat burning purpose if you're a novice; or serve as a reminder for those who are at an advanced or more improve phase of their weightloss strategy. Not only will this keep your mind on track, it will also give you some extra motivation for when you are up and about again. If you can't work on your body, it's an excellent time to work on your mind set.
