We all know that diabetes is a life-threatening disease, and is most often associated with obesity. But did you know that diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the U.S.? Did you know that it kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined? (as reported in the Oct 28-Nov 3, 2012 of American Profile magazine) And the key for diabetics is to control their diet, especially the number of carbohydrates they eat. Carbs play an extremely important role in regulating blood sugar levels, and this is most critical for a diabetic.
So you would think that on a program that totally focused on carbohydrates, as todays (October 31) Doctor Ozs TV program did, that there would be the mention of diabetes, given the importance of carbs in the diabetics diet. But, there was not one word! The title of todays show was Cut your carb cravings, and featured personal trainer and transformation specialist, Chris Powell. You may have seen him on the television program, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. I have seen that show, and he is a good trainer for his clients. Chris started out by saying that carbs are the root of all obesity. He should have clarified that unrefined carbs can play an important role in weight control and blood sugar levels, especially for diabetics. But he didnt, and neither did Doctor Oz.
Notwithstanding the obvious omission of the connection between carbohydrates and diabetes, Powell did provide some interesting information. For example, one of the reasons why people overeat carbs is other peoplewe eat because of cues from others and we want to fit in. Another reason is hypno-bingeing, or eating out of boredom. Finally, eating out is a key reason why people are obese. The food is often cheap, and portion sizes have grown by more than 100 percent over the past thirty years. Despite the media hype that has people confused about carbs, we cannot cut out carbs. They are a source of energy, and our bodies need them.
Powells solution to the carb overload is the 7-day carb diet plan, where you cycle between high- and low-carb days. This might be fine for a person with no health problems, but for diabetics, it could spell disaster that endangers their health and lives. This diet plan, though, included a shocker, the seventh dayyour cheat day. Here you are, good all week, watching your diet, and then you can blow it by up to 1000 calories in carbs that are high in sugar? Since when does that make good sense? It is like taking two steps forward and then three steps backward. A fat reducing overview can help you produce a clear describe of what you need to focus on to achieve your fat reducing purpose if you're a rookie; or serve as a reminder for these who are at an advanced or more advance stage of their weight loss strategy. Doctor Oz, my faith in your judgment is severely compromised, and your not even mentioning diabetes has totally caused me to be even more skeptical about what you say.
You still left hanging an answer to the question: What IS the right number of carbs to have in your diet? For diabetics, that is often between 60 and 120 grams of carbs in a day, depending on the severity of the disease. Of course, the exact number is something that needs to be discussed with your doctor. Just roughly calculating the carbs in the five small meals in the diet plan, it appeared to exceed 120, and that was just for the starchy carbs (breads, pasta, etc.). Unfortunately, when you check out Chris Powell's recipes on Doctor Oz's website, you will not find the number of carbs in them.
People need to educate themselves on what constitutes a healthy diet, the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates, and the role carbs, proteins, and fats play in a diet. Just because a famous doctor says something or does not say something, does not make it so. Check out the facts for yourself.
