I just received an email from a potential client wanting a new personal trainer because her current trainer wasn't "meeting her expectations." When I asked her what she meant by 'expectations,' I was shocked by her answer:
She began to confess that her current trainer has not shown up for their appointments for the past month, without letting her know ahead of time. 1.) They should be current in their certififications (both in personal training and First Aid). Personal training certifications requires CEU's every two years so make sure your trainer is up to date. It is also required that your trainer be fully insured. Ask to see documentations of all these things.
2.) A quality trainer should provide you with an educated and challenging workout every time. If your trainer will not adjust to meet your physical demands, it is time to look for another one. Along with this (and to address the above experience - your trainer should never just 'not show up' for your sessions).
3.) Your trainer should also be a good listener. It is your workout and your money. Keep in mind - the trainer is the one with the education so you have to be comfortable sharing your goals with them and letting them take the reins from there. If, like my new client above, your body is responding adversely to the training and you are not happy with the results, you need to tell your trainer. If they refuse to adjust your program, it is time to move on.
4.) Your trainer should be able to provide you with testimonials and positive reviews from other clients. Ask to see written testimonials or read their google reviews. Keep in mind that google reviews could not always reflect the way his/her business is run, as often one unhappy client could spoil 100 other happy ones.
5.) You should leave your session with your trainer feeling good about yourself. You should feel great physically (albeit, tired), and motivated to reach your health/wellness goals.
6.) Your trainer should also be willing to provide you with a meal plan and exercise regimens to overcome weight loss plateaus. Keep in mind, trainers are not certified nutritionists, so be sure to check with your doctor before implementing their recommendations.
