Boston Pilates instructor Lisa Johnson runs the Modern Pilates fitness studio in Brookline, Mass., and has a popular blog at LisaJohnsonFitness.com, which covers more than just Pilates touching on food, fitness and how people sometimes struggle to balance it all.

We talked with Johnson about the DVDs and Pilates in general.

Q. What drew you to Pilates?

A. I started doing Pilates because of a dislocated knee. (I was pretending I was in a Janet Jackson video in my living room and that was a bad idea!) After I recovered from the injury and did three months of physical therapy, my knee was still bothering me. I stumbled upon Pilates, straightened out my knee and fell in love with the movement so much I wanted to share it with others.

Q. Who are the new DVDs designed for?

A. Really anyone. I made sure the workouts could be done in a tight space, and you only need a yoga mat for a bit of cushioning. The sweet spot is the advanced beginner / intermediate exerciser, but I have modifications for beginner to advanced so the workouts will definitely grow with you and keep you challenged.

Q. What can Pilates do for a person thats different from cardio or strength training?

A. Pilates is a form of strength training but a very sophisticated one. Instructors have extensive knowledge of anatomy and we really know how to cue form. We're always making sure your bones are in the right place so your muscles can work effectively. Where we really differentiate is how we train the abs. The way you connect your muscles causes you to get a "scoop," the opposite of a muffin top, and it works fast -- my clients LOVE that.

Q. Any tips for people who are new to Pilates?

A. If you go to a class, make sure the instructor knows you're new so she can keep an eye on you. Even if you're a top-flight athlete, the choreography of Pilates and the way we work the muscles are different, so have a little patience while you're figuring out form. If an Olympic athlete walked into my studio with no prior Pilates experience we'd consider them a beginner just like you!
