When it comes to the world of weathermen, the "Today" show's Al Roker is in a category of his own. But although he's the king when it comes to forecasts, he felt humbled and humiliated for years when he struggled with his weight. Now Al has lightened his load by 135 pounds and gained faith in himself. And he tells his inspiring story of his transformation, including how you can achieve weight loss success, in "Never Goin' Back: Winning the Weight-Loss Battle For Good," published Dec. 31.
At 5 feet, 8 inches tall, Al weighed 340 pounds at his peak. He chose weight loss surgery in 2002, and lost 100 pounds in just eight months. But Al regained most of that weight just a few years later, when he returned to his fattening food favorites to help him cope with a family crisis. Al admits that it's an ongoing battle to deal with his emotions without using food. Before, "eating was like self-medicating. But if you abuse food, you still have to use that substance that you abuse every day. You have to learn to use it responsibly."
