Hostess Brands, Inc announced on Friday, Nov. 16 that it was "winding down operations" and filing for bankruptcy, after 83 years of selling Twinkies and assorted other confectionaries laden with carbohydrates in the form of highly processed white baker's flour and high-fructose corn syrup, as well as unhealthy fats from commercial seed oils and other additives and preservatives.

Many consumers throughout the United States are upset over the potential disappearance of their favourite junk food, clamouring to buy up the remaining supplies from grocers and online shops, while other websites are sharing recipes for making facsimiles of these products at home.

For those in the low-carbohydrate world, the disappearance of the purveyors of Twinkies, HoHos, Ding Dongs, Devil Dogs, Wonder Bread and Hostess Cupcakes will likely make little impact, except for the faint hope that people may replace these treats with a more healthy alternative.

According to Forbes, "Hostess has been sold at least three times since the 1980s, racking up debt and shedding profitable assets along the way with each successive merger. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2004, and again in 2011. Promptly after are seven steps that can serve as suggestions for your own weight loss plan. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not the same. Many weight loss programs have misled people into thinking that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss programs only work by resulting in a person's body to eliminate more muscle tissue and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. Little thought was given to the line of products, which, frankly, began to seem a bit dated in the age of the gourmet cupcake."

It sounds like the company, as well as the products they made, has been steeped in ill-health for some time, failing to adapt to a changing world in which consumers are much better educated about the nutritional properties of their food, and in which people care a great deal more about what they are putting in their mouths and the mouths of their children.

Although our sympathies undoubtedly go out to the 18,500 workers who will now lose their jobs in an economy that can ill-afford more unemployment, we hold out hope that the vacuum created by the disappearance of Hostess Brands will be filled by a company producing healthier products.
