October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You see pink ribbons displayed in advertisements, as pendants on necklaces and bracelets, and even the NFL is sporting their bright pink sneakers. You support the cause, but are you doing your part in the fight to end breast cancer?

According to the American Cancer Society web site, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. So, if its never got your attention before, hopefully it has now.

Although its not completely preventable (genetics do play a part), there are a lot of things you can do to greatly reduce the risk that youll ever have to be face-to-face with this gruesome monster of a disease.

Dont smoke. If you never have, good for you. If you do smoke, quit. Sure, its not easy but it is worth it. Need help? Download this free guide from the American Cancer Society.

Limit alcohol. Not only does daily alcohol consumption increase your risk of breast cancer, but it ups the odds of other forms of cancer as well. Is alcohol a problem for you? Check out the list of available resources compiled by the Mayo Clinic.

Get to a healthy body weight. The worst kind of fat is belly fat. The less you have, the lower your risk of cancer. If you want to lose weight and need help, there are many programs on the market today. A fat loss overview can help you produce a clear outline of what you demand to focus on to complete your fat reducing target if you're a novice; or serve as a reminder for those who are at an intermediate or more improve step of their weight loss plan. Promptly after are seven steps that can serve as instructions for your personal weight loss plan. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not a similar thing. Many weight loss plans have fooled people into believing that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss applications only work by producing a person's body to lose more muscle flesh and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. Not every program works for every individual, but a general piece of advice is to stay away from get-thin-quick schemes. What you want to find is a program that teaches you healthy eating and exercise habits that you can sustain for life.

Exercise. Get your body moving. It doesnt have to be hour-long gym sessions, either. Go for a walk around the block. Park further out in the parking lot when you go to the grocery store. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Every little bit adds up.

Its hard to change habits, especially ones youve had for years upon years. But, what do you think is harder? Quitting smoking or watching your family watch you die of cancer? Cutting down on the amount of alcohol you drink or going through chemotherapy? Dropping some pounds or lying in a hospital bed in pain and agony?

Is that too graphic? So is cancer. And its senseless when you can take action that may prevent you from getting it. Will taking care of yourself and developing a healthy lifestyle guarantee that youll never face a cancer diagnosis? Unfortunately, no. But, what if it would have prevented yours?
