As I wrote back in January, P90X is a workout program from Beachbody that promises to "transform your body from regular to ripped in just 90 days." The DVD set includes 12 workouts that target different areas of your body, including strength training and other routines (kickboxing , plyometrics and yoga) to help improve cardiovascular fitness and flexibility.
The premise of the program is "muscle confusion, which involves a rotation of moves and routines so there's never a plateau in progress. P90Xs plan is broken into three phases, with a recovery week in between before ramping back up again. Every day features a different focus, so both mind and body stay engaged. Simple? Yes. Easy? Anything but
My husband and I are just over a third of the way through the program, and although neither of us would qualify as ripped at this point, weve definitely seen enough progress in strength and flexibility to keep us motivated for the duration.
For example, I can now do a full set of real push-ups, plus an unassisted pull-up something that I could never accomplish, despite years of strength training. And thanks to the weekly yoga videos, my husband is able to touch his toes during the hamstring stretch; no small feat for a 65 man who is averse to stretching.
Trainer Tony Horton has become our daily workout companion, alternately offering advice (Todays tip of the day is to breathe) and encouragement (Do your best and forget the rest), as well as the occasional reprimand (Suck it up; no one said this was easy!). The videos feature real people, really sweating, which is refreshing as we struggle through the routines ourselves.
Even though were both active and in good shape, the workouts are challenging, so it helps to have a partner to alternate responsibility for staying motivated. But be warned P90X is not for the commitment-phobic. Our strategy has been to focus on our respective weak spots (me, strength; him, flexibility), track progress and celebrate small victories along the way. Some days (ok, most) are torturous, but its been exciting to see quantifiable results within a matter of weeks.
