One of the latest diet books to reach the market this year is The Plan, by Lyn-Genet Recitas. The front cover states: Eliminate the Surprising Healthy Foods That Are Making You Fatand Lose Weight Fast

There are those magic magnetic words again: lose weight fast. You know the ones--the words that draw in millions who are sometimes clueless on what it takes to lose weight in a healthy manner. The back cover states that The Plan is not a diet. Yes, it is! A diet is anything you eat or drink. Yes, it can also mean a prescribed eating regimen, but its basic definition is what you consume. Despite the hype you find on many diet books, the book does have some interesting information, and will give you a greater look at how chemistry figures into our diet.

How fast is fast on The Plan? The program is 20 days. The book appeals to those who are eating well and who exercise, and have not had success on other plans. So how does Ms. Recitas, a nutritionist who has appeared on the Doctor Oz TV program, want to help you? She says it very simply: "Weight gain is nothing more than your bodys chemical reaction to foodYoure simply eating certain reactive foods that are triggering an inflammatory response." In short, it is all about the chemistry and not the calories, the premise of this book. While this weight watcher is neither a chemist nor a nutritionist, she knows that when your body is inflamed, you have health issues.

The book's back cover states that calories, carbs, or fat are not causing you to gain weight. To the uninformed person wanting to lose weight, that statement would certainly grab your attention. And, at first read, the author is right. We have to eat, so the consumption of calories, carbs, and fat is part of that need to survive. But what people are not hearing is that everything in moderation. If your doctor puts you on a 1200-calorie diet, you are not supposed to get all those calories from fried chicken, donuts, or key lime pie (but that would be nice, wouldnt it?). The author states that carbs and portion sizes, it turns out, are not the problem. Well, it is for many people, and certainly for diabetics. And the restaurant industry is helping (or not) with that, given that many of your restaurant plates have three portions on them, enough to share with two other people or to take home for two leftover meals.

The Plan tells you why certain foods are the problem and others are not. You will read what the trigger foods are for you that are causing an inflammatory reaction in your body. The program begins with Phase 1, a 3-day cleanse. You have to also take some supplements, and you will be drinking a lot of water. If you are already drinking a lot of water, no problem for you. There is no nutritional information, such as calories or carbs, listed for the diet plan menues. Phase 2, the testing phase, guides you through testing for your reactivity to foods, and you learn more about the chemistry involved.

THE SCOOP ON ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS: The author does provide information on why you should never use artificial sweeteners. They contain excitotoxins that latch onto brain cells and shorten their lifespan. And, excitotoxins cause sugar cravings and water retention. Alzheimers and neurological disorders have been linked to artificial sweeteners. No one has ever lost weight using artificial sweeteners. WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THE PLAN PROGRAM: If you love structure in a diet plan (you want to be told exactly what to eat and when), where everything is laid out in detail for you, AND you are disciplined enough to follow the 20-day program, you can likely give yourself a jumpstart to a more permanent way of eating (see Beck Diet Solution). Or, if you have been losing weight and those last 10 pounds are just not budging, you may find some success on The Plan. The recipes are in the book. You may have to beef up your spices and herbs inventory. The book has a Spring Menu and a Thyroid Menu. With 300 pages, you will be keeping yourself busy as you work on your weight loss plan.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DIETICIAN AND A NUTRITIONIST: Keep in mind that a nutritionist does not need a degree, and some states may not require that they be licensed, either. There are colleges that have started a degree program, but to call yourself a nutritionist requires nothing. If you truly need more specialized help, you would want a dietician (who need to have a degree and be licensed) or, at the very list, a degreed nutritionist.
