Fair food in general is not a great option for those who are trying to lose weight. Everything is battered, deep fried, and full of either sugar or fat. While the Tennessee State Fair has thus far managed to avoid the most cringe-worthy choices available in other fairs, such as Deep Fried Butter and Deep Fried Coke, it still has its share of offerings to make your cardiologist cry. Deep Fried Goo Goo Clusters
This dish has the label of "The Official Food of the Tennessee State Fair", but it should really be sponsored by one of the local hospitals. You take a chocolately, marshmallowy candy bar that contains 230 calories on its own, you dip it in a high calorie batter, and you dunk it in fat. It looks disgusting and what it does to your waist line is even more so.
Hot Beef Sundae
On its surface, the hot beef sundae actually sounds kind of healthy relative to other fair foods. It isn't deep fried and actually contains meat and potatoes, which do contain some nutrients. The downfall to this dish is in the massive portions. You take two huge scoops of mashed potatoes, cover that with a fistful of cheese, then layer on a giant scoop of beef, more cheese, and then slather the whole thing in gravy. If you have 2-3 people to split this with, it isn't a horrible fair food option, but most people eat it, and its over 1000 calories, alone.
Funnel Cake Sundae
Funnel Cakes are one of the most traditional high fat fair foods, but with the recent advent of "deep fried everything" they've lost some of their luster. If the Bucket O' Fries isn't meeting your fat and calorie needs alone, you have the option of a quicker suicide by adding chili and cheese to your bucket.
