It's a simple formula: Burn more calories than you consume, and you'll lose weight. The problem for most dieters: Hunger. Nibbling at half an English muffin at breakfast, half a grapefruit at noon and steamed broccoli topped with broiled fish at dinner looks good on paper when it comes to restricting calories. But managing your appetite is another story. That's where low-carbohydrate diets come in, according to a new study conducted at Temple University, reported June 23 by NewsFix. Researchers discovered that when overweight volunteers consumed low-carb diets of 20 grams of carbohydrates daily, they voluntarily ate 1,000 fewer calories daily. The result: On average, they lost about two pounds each week.

So what's the message? Researchers theorize that when you eat more starchy foods, you stimulate your appetite, making it harder to lose weight. That's one reason why so many dieters succeed in shedding pounds on weight loss plans such as the Atkins diet. The key to success: Counting carbohydrate grams rather than calories. That means you can indulge in protein and fat but must reduce your intake of sweets and starch (volunteers in the study limited their carbs to 20 grams).

An alternative to traditional low-carbohydrate diets: Paleo plans.
