Do you have a loved one whos trying to shed some pounds, or stones if youre British (1 stone = 14 pounds)? Are you getting frustrated because it feels like youre trying harder than they are? How do you support them in their weight loss efforts without it driving a wedge in your relationship?

Its hard to stand by and just watch when someone you love struggles with their weight. It seems so simple. Eat less and exercise, right? So, why dont they just do it?

If losing weight was that easy, everyone would be thin and fit. That means that your loved one struggles with the same issue that plagues millions of people around the world. But, there are things you can do that will help them, and keep you sane in the process.

First, try to understand whats hindering their efforts. Is it that they really dont see it as an issue? Do they feel ashamed of their weight and dont like to ask anyone else for help? Are they an emotional eater and have difficulty dealing with life without food? Whatever their reason, putting yourself in their shoes helps you to keep your patience when the going gets tough (and it will).

Second, lead by example. Can you really expect them to eat carrots and celery when youre eating cupcakes? This ones tough because you shouldnt have to watch what you eat just because they need to, right? If this is how you see it, maybe its time to change your perspective. Look at it this way. If its so good for them, why isnt it good for you too?

If you really want to help them succeed with weight loss, live the life they should live with them. Eat healthy and get in some exercise. By showing them that youre invested in doing what it takes to make it happen, they will appreciate your efforts instead of hating you for pushing something on them that youre unwilling to do yourself.

Third, dont make snide remarks about their weight or their efforts to lose it. Its easy to get frustrated when you see someone make not-so-good choices, but making them feel bad isnt going to help. This is especially true if they are an emotional eater. If someone relies on food when they feel down and you make them feel down, you are only continuing the cycle. Fifth, if you really, really want to help them succeed, let this be their choice. Like the old saying goes, You can lead a horse to water, but you cant make it drink. Dealing with someone who is embarking on a change process is the same whether they are five years old or fifty. The more you make this about you and not about them, the more they will dig in their heels and not want to do it.

This isnt about you and your frustrations. This is about them, what has led them to being overweight, what behaviors need to change and what you can do to support them in the process.

If you truly care about them, and you must because youre reading this, be there for them. Listen to their cares and concerns without judgment. Make them feel loved despite their weight issues. Let them know that you are with them every step of the way. Not only will they appreciate your support, but youll find a closeness and connection that will nurture your relationship; not tear it apart.
